The bikini that is still popular today, was invented in Paris in 1946 by Louis Reard and Jacques Heim. However, at the time, due to its due to the scantiness of its design, not a lot of people had the courage to wear one. This attitude changed in the following decade. This was probably due to Brigitte Bardot wearing one in film ‘And God Created Woman’. This heralded The bikini revolution and soon it was became popular beachwear.
At present the bikini seems to have become more modest in character. Nowadays the trend seems to be that Bikini bottoms offer more coverage than in the past. But they are still styled to retain their sex appeal.
Bikinis come in a variety of styles, but they are essentially still variants pf the two part costume. They are also commonly combined with a sarong.
